Waiting Child: Cuyler
Sex: M
Age: 13 (ages out in December)
Cuyler is strong and sensitive and always ready to help others. He likes to play chess, is shy with strangers, but very easy going. He shows respect to his elders. He struggles a bit with language, but gets good marks in math and is athletic and creative. Cuyler got very excited when we asked him math questions and perked up and we could see his confidence during that part of our interview with him. He seems very sweet and gentle, playful with the other boys, but a little calmer than the more rambunctious ones. He really wants a family and is willing to learn English and go to the U.S.

Waiting Child: Finley
Sex: M
Age: 9
Finley has charisma and his smile is like a ray of sunshine, which attracts people to him. He has strong language skills and likes to recite children?s poems, songs and he can read with the common characters. He can read and write numbers, do simple addition and subtraction and is interested in learning. He uses a wheelchair in his daily life to get around. Finley is incredibly independent. He can get himself in and out of his wheelchair to his bed or the floor. He even did a somersault for us on his bed! He is a sweet boy who doesn?t let his special need slow him down. He was full of smiles when we fitted the kids with costumes and let them play around. He got right in there with the other boys and played. I bet he would be a great basketball player! He is very sweet and cute. Finley does have some strength in his legs, so it may be possible to develop that further with therapy. He is a happy, bright, curious and good natured boy. He said he wants a family and would love to have younger brothers.

Sex: M
Age: 7
Greer has big, bright eyes and is cute and energetic. He is an intelligent and naughty little boy. Sometimes he will run up to his caregivers with a book, like he knows how to read, then he will ask about the subjects he knows in the book. He is shy with strangers, but has a warm heart for those he knows and will make good eye contact when talking with them. He likes watching TV and imitating. He can be a bit of a tattle tale, running to his teachers when other kids take away his toys. His teachers call it a good self-protection ability. Greer likes to play basketball and wants a family of his own with siblings. He knows a few English words and was willing to say them for us. He is a very helpful boy, and helped to carry our things while we were there. We found him to be very bright and responsive. He likes to play hide and seek and his best friend is Finley.

Age: 8
Kane is an athletic boy who is interested in learning as well. He began school and can now count, do addition and subtraction, recite poems, and express his needs clearly. He knows and can write simple Chinese characters and loves sports and activities. He takes care of all of his daily living tasks and keeps himself very clean and tidy. He has good personal hygiene habits and sometimes he helps his caregivers with chores that are age appropriate. He likes to play with other children and would prefer a family with other siblings. He won a prize for his grade level in drawing and likes to play computer games.

Sex: M
Age: 4.5
Doug is a gentle and quiet child who is very sweet and loving. He has been in a foster family for 3 years now and expresses his love and affection for his foster mom every morning when he wakes up. She can?t help to kiss his sweet face. He helps her do chores and is a sensible boy. He likes watching TV, listening to music and playing outside. When we met Doug he was exactly as described?the sweetest boy you would ever meet with a smile that just glows. He seems small, but is very responsive, capable and loving. He was interested in new experiences, although he doesn?t have access to many new experiences in his foster home. With the love and stimulation that a family would provide, I believe that Doug would blossom and make a family very happy!

Age: 4
Winston is cute, lovely and a bit delicate. He likes playing with toys that make sound, listening to the TV, radio or music and will wave his hands when he is happy. Despite not being able to see, he can point to his body parts and walk with his hand held for guidance. He likes to eat and will tell his nannies so. Winston is potty trained. He is a cute and clever boy. When we met him, I played music for him on my Ipad. He took the Ipad and held up to his face. When the music changed he giggled. He swayed to the music and seemed to have good rhythm. Winston is able to do quite a lot for himself, despite not being able to see. He even found a toy that we asked him for in a strange place.

Sex: F
Age: 13 (ages out in October)
Hillary is cute and clever. She loves to sing and often participates in performances. She gained high praise for her performance in Snow White. She likes games that challenge her, like grass skating and sliding. She is polite to others, cute and intelligent, but also has a personality like a boy, naughty with a temper. However, she does well with a place to calm down. She is in Grade 3 and has good learning ability in class, but does not like to do her homework. She has received certificates of merit and prize in her class performance. Hillary is a bit slower than other kids to answer questions and sometimes needs to write things down. Hillary helps the other children in her group home who can?t help themselves. When we asked her about a family, she said she wants a big family with parents to raise her and provide a home.

Sex: M
Age: 6
Cole?s nannies call him handsome boy in Chinese; he has a ready smile and is kind and introverted. Although he has ear deformities, he can still hear some sounds, and he loves music and TV. He can imitate some funny actions from the TV and make his nannies burst into laughter until their sides ache. He is very neat and doesn?t like to be dirty, so he has developed good hygiene habits. He likes to show off his new clothes to his nannies and won?t stop until they say he is beautiful. He is a good and helpful boy. Every time he sees the nannies carrying something, he will run over to help. He is a very capable and good boy.

Age: 7
Lacey is extroverted, forward and welcoming. She will introduce herself to others on her own initiative and she establishes good relationships. She loves to play games with other children and she is a sensible and good girl. She studies and lives in the preschool class and adapts to new circumstances quickly. She studies on her own initiative and her intelligence has improved greatly since entering school. Lacey is very affectionate and would clearly do well in a loving family who can help her reach her full potential. She has the ability to be independent. When we asked her about family, she said she would prefer having a younger sister and/or younger brother. She likes dresses and prefers to play with girls over boys ?because they fight.? She is shy and tender in new situations. She is able to answer simple questions and seems to speak in phrases mostly. Lacey is sweet, timid around older boys and girlie.

Sex: M
Age: 4
Bryce is extroverted, energetic, obstinate, and talkative and likes to play games with other children. He is interested in new things and likes to play outside when the weather is nice. 3 years ago he entered a foster family and adapted well. He can now scribble, go up and down stairs freely, help with putting on clothes and take them off by himself. When he sees people he knows, he says hello sweetly of his own initiative. He is helpful when he sees his foster mother doing chores.

Sex: M
Age: 4
Brandon is quiet and diligent, but will flirt when he is cuddled by his caretakers. He makes others laughs and always welcomes his family excitedly when he sees them return. He is a cute and lovely boy. He has hand and foot differences and is able to walk alone. He is able to pick up toys, food or his milk bottle and use his hands when he needs to. He likes to sway to music and he turns his head when someone calls his name. Brandon is very shy at first, but will open up with encouragement from his foster mom. He liked the balloon I brought out, as well as music. He especially liked seeing himself and his friends in pictures and video. He is a very sweet boy and his foster mother is very attached to him.

Age: 9
Josiah came to the institute when he was 5 years old and was assessed as having sensory neural hearing loss with the suggestion to get a cochlear implant. He is clever, lovely, extroverted, active and handsome boy. He can express his needs by simple sign or body posture. He has learned to sign and is also reads lips. He is good at taking care of himself. He is also good at imitating and drawing what he sees or thinks with some simple pictures. Josiah won a national drawing championship for his age with a picture of a dragon that was very detailed. He didn?t hesitate to arm wrestly with our program coordinator while we were visiting. He likes to play house with other children. He is interested in new things, but has trouble sharing. He entered special education in 2008 and now knows how to read and recite some simple children?s poems in sign language. He is cooperative with his teacher and finishes his homework on time. He is an excellent student, especially in math and Chinese. He wants a family very much. He has seen his friends get adopted and wants to go to the U.S. He is willing to learn English. He says he wants to be adopted and ride in airplanes and drive them! Josiah is smart, adaptable and would make the right family very happy.

Waiting Child: Yvonne
Sex: F
Age: 4
Yvonne is quiet and obedient, and her caretakers? favorite. She likes colorful toys with sounds, listening to music and imitating. Her happiest time is when her foster parents take her to the community to play. She is delicate and pretty. She likes to wear dresses and change her clothes several times a day to stay clean. She can now go upstairs and downstairs without help, walk alone steadily and her language has improved. She can say simple words and express herself. She can count and knows the difference between male and female. She can also identify objects in books. Yvonne was very sweet and a little shy at first. However, once she warmed up she didn?t hesitate to interact with us and liked showing off her skills. She has good immitation ability. When we drew a face with an ear, she was able to do the same thing. She is quite adorable. He foster family loves her, but is prepared for the fact that she may be adopted and they want her to have a forever family.

Age: 7
Eve is outgoing and adaptable. She is curious about new visitors and cameras. She likes to play outside. She entered preschool in May of 2011 and has made progress in every aspect. She is close to her caretaker and understands her questions and directions. Eve is unable to speak, but tries very hard to communicate.

Sex: F
Age: 2
Justine entered a foster family in May 2010 and quickly became the family favorite. She is active, happy, has a ready smile and likes to be cuddled. She can bang two blocks together and say ?yiyayiyayiya.? She is fairly chubby and cannot walk alone yet, but can with help.

Waiting Child: Tanner
Sex: M
Age: 12
Tanner is strong and can communicate clearly and well with others. He is very clever and will reason with his caregivers to make them unable to refuse his request. He is full of passion, curiosity and energy. He cried after he heard about the earthquake and donated his allowance. He also gets concerned about his tired aunts and gives them massages. Now he is in 3rd grade and likes to study English. He can listen and recite well. He can read and answers questions actively in class. He was able to hold an entire conversation with me in English and was the first one to approach me when I arrived at his foster home. Under the guidance of parents and teachers, he can write well and neatly when he is careful. He is a smart boy and knows it, and therefore doesn?t feel that he has to try very hard, but he excels in English and music. We have video of Tanner playing the piano beautifully. He is also a rambunctious boy and would do well in a family with brothers. However, Tanner is not picky about the kind of family he has as long as he gets a family. He said rich or poor, big or small, single or two parents, he is ok with any of it! The boy is just dreaming of a family! He lived with single foster mom previously for 8 years, but she got older and was unable to care for him any longer. Could you be the family Tanner has been dreaming of?

Waiting Child: Taryn
Sex: F
Age: 12
Taryn is a girl with a positive attitude all around. She is sensitive and careful, kind and active. She likes to help other children and has a very nurturing, motherly personality. She studies at the Special Education School and is a Superstar in her school. She enjoys thinking and improving her skills. She is a good student and each year she wins praise for being an excellent student. She is a leader in her class and helps the others study. She helps her teacher and her classmates and likes to study, obey the rules and finish her homework on time. Taryn is a very sweet girl and has entered the age where she cares about her looks and wants to look feminine. She loves to dance, especially Jazz and modern dance and she is quite good at it. Taryn wants a family very much. She thinks the U.S. is better than China and is scared about being alone. She is very capable and care for her daily needs, as well as the more handicapped children. She was the M.C. for her school Children?s Day performance. She can say some simple words in English. She likes to go out shopping and practice her dance moves in her free time. Taryn would do well in just about any family, but especially one with a parent who can help her to transition from being a mother-type to being mothered.

Sex: F
Age: 10.5
Lidia likes singing and dancing and showing her pretty side to people. She is outgoing and has a ready smile, good manners and is very adaptable. She is willing to communicate with others and gets along well with everyone. In 2008 she enrolled in Special Education and is now reading simple children?s poems, can write simple characters and knows numbers up to 100. She does have an irregularity in her gait due to her special need and can participate in simple physical activities. She also receives rehabilitation training in order to improve. Lidia jumped right into our camp activities when we visited. She enjoyed dressing up as a fairy and then a pirate. She also is quite a tease with new people and likes to play hide and seek. She didn?t like to have her picture taken much. She goes to school at the orphanage, but next year she has been selected to attend school outside of the orphanage. She likes PE class best. She would like to have a family and she thinks she would like to have younger brothers and sisters. She played well with all of the other kids at the orphanage, and was very caring in helping the children in wheelchairs to get around.

Sex: M
Age: 13
Faron is an active, outgoing and curious child who loves to sing. He is bright and can recite many Tang Dynasty poems that he has only heard once. He asks a lot of questions and gets along well with others. He loves to play outdoors, swing, bumper cars at the amusement park and the alpine slide. He also loves music. He has excellent oral studying and memorization skills, but his learning and reading of Braille is slower than his peers. He knows many simple English words, can identify fruit and shapes by smell or touch and knows the days of the week. He is gentle and kind and his peers love him very much.

Sex: M
Age: 3
Julian is extroverted, but shy with new people. He is competitive and self-confident. He is very determined, likes colorful toys or those that make sounds, he likes to look at picture books, playing outdoors and scribbling. He is interested in learning and has a lot of potential. He can walk, run and climb, but he needs to wear diapers all of the time. He can speak in simple words and make his needs known. He did a little song and dance with encouragement from his half the sky teacher while we were visiting. He seemed to be a very sweet boy who liked to cuddle with his teachers and needed some reassurance from them. He was also very mellow and easy going. He didn?t seem to mind anything that was going on, even his physical exam.

Sex: M
Age: 11
Jenner is cute, bright, lovely, active, outgoing, polite and friendly. He?s also quite rambunctious and his special need does not slow him down or prevent him from rough housing with the best of ?em! He loves to play outdoors and when he is especially happy, he likes to play with words that sound nice, which makes his nannies laugh. The nannies all say that he is a funny boy. He can walk alone with the help of a leg rest. He gets along well with his caretakers and obeys the rules. He speaks fluently and expresses his needs and wants well. He has good imitating ability and likes to observe his environment. He sang a song with another boy for us and that video is available. Jenner is a swimmer and likes to swim the breath stroke best. His best friend is Tanner and is was quite evident by the ways they interacted. Jenner is in 5th grade and ready to leave and join a forever family. He is interested in having siblings and hopes that there will be some help for his leg. He was able to speak some basic English words for us when we asked.

Age: 10
Paul is a lovely, sensible and polite boy. When he first entered the institute and his school, it took him some time to adjust, but after a year he made a lot of progress. Now he can take care of his daily living needs by himself, listen to his teachers carefully and join in the activities. He can express his feelings and likes to watch cartoons, listen to stories or play with toys with sounds. He can count and write 1 through 100 and read basic characters. Paul likes computer games and running. He is a responsible boy and while we were talking to him he became worried about finishing all of his homework. He is interested in having a family with a Mom, Dad and siblings.

Waiting Child: Jasper
Sex: M
Age: 3
Jasper is active, outgoing, obstinate and adored by everyone. He is fond of playing games, talking and imitating others?. He likes to play with Ultraman and his favorite activity is going outside to take a walk and play with his foster family. When he gets upset because he doesn?t get what he wants, he responds well to a time out. He is always energetic. When we met Jasper, his foster family brought him to a different home so we could see him. He was quite distraught at the strange and unknown place and cried most of the time. However, when I turned on music, he stopped crying and put his hand on the Ipad that was playing the music. He definitely enjoyed the music more than anything else. He was able to move himself around in a strange environment without help by knocking on the walls to find his way.

Sex: M
Age: 10
Johann is healthy and strong, energetic and active. He loves to run back and forth, playing with the other children. He likes transformers, cars and airplanes. He has a good attention span and likes to take toys apart and put them back together. His language has been delayed, but he is making progress with his teacher. Now he is able to recite simple nursery rhymes and ancient poems. He is able to sing songs, count numbers and write words. He is a responsible young man and will finish the tasks he is given. He is able to take care of himself daily and can help his caregivers with age appropriate chores. Johann is in second grade and is interested in having a family with a Mom and Dad and younger siblings. He reported that he only likes to play with younger children. He also likes computer games and explained that he likes to play in bed at night because he can see the screen best when it?s dark. He likes school, but doesn?t like to read.
