What started as a violent?Fayetteville, N.C., break-in Saturday morning turned into a police chase and shootout, NBC station WNCN reported. Three people were killed and three others were injured, including a suspect who was hospitalized after being shot by police.
Sgt. Gary Womble said?police responding to a break-in call found two?dead?and three others wounded inside a home. One of the wounded later died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Womble said police chased the suspect who had taken off in a?car.
"As they followed the vehicle, the vehicle refused to stop for them and a short pursuit ensued," Womble said. The suspect?was fleeing on foot when police shot him.
"It is a sad situation but we do our jobs the best we can to investigate these crimes,"?Womble told WNCN.
Police say they'll release the names of the people involved once family members have been notified.
The State Bureau of Investigation, which handles all cases involving police shootings, has been called in. Two?officers involved were not injured but both were?placed on administrative duty until the investigation is completed.
